Members of the non-profit group Manitoba Women 4 Women of South Sudan (MW4WSS) are taking a stand and working for peace in their country. UWinnipeg’s Institute for International Women’s Rights at Global College in partnership the MW4WSS is hosting a Women’s Peace Table on South Sudan on November 12, 2016, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the South Sudanese Community Centre, 129 Dagmar Street. The focus will be on women’s full participation in creating and maintaining peace within South Sudan.

“The Women’s Peace Table is important to me because I’m a South Sudanese woman who has been given the opportunity to access education, among others things, which has empowered me as a woman,” shared Akech Mayuom-Deng, a student and a member of the South Sudanese community. “Many women don’t have these opportunities in South Sudan and all over the world. I believe that it is critical that we, South Sudanese, and our allies, work toward empowering women to be leaders in their communities in bringing about peace to South Sudan. I think that the peace circle  is just one very important step in advocating for this and I’m really excited to be a part of this initiative.”

The discussion will focus on the dialogue and current violent situation in South Sudan and how women can be instrumental in creating long lasting peace. Women and girls, men and boys, are all important to creating a better tomorrow for all our communities.

This event is in partnership with the Rotary Peace Partners; the Institute for International Women’s Rights Manitoba; and the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders.
