Soccer Teams Win First Matches

The Winnipeg Wesmen Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams each picked up their first wins of the 2013 Canada West regular season this past week. The men’s team picked up a hard fought 1-0 victory over Fraser Valley on home turf last Thursday. The women’s team scored the winning goal in extra time to beat Lethbridge 2-1 this past Saturday afternoon on the road..

23rd Annual Duckworth Challenge Kicks Off On Saturday

The 23rd edition of the Duckworth Challenge will kick off this Saturday night with a new addition. For the first time in history Women’s Soccer will be added to the annual competition between the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba. The match will take place on Saturday, September 21st at the University of Manitoba’s West Field. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Baseball Marathon Game This Saturday

The 3rd Annual “Wesmen Baseball Marathon Game” will take place this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Shaw Park. The event will serve as a program fundraiser for the Wesmen Baseball Program. Admission to the event is free highlighted by a marathon game between the Wesmen and local media, celebrities and corporate representation…

MBCI Wins High School Boys Volleyball Tournament

Congratulations to the MBCI Hawks Varsity Boy’s Volleyball Team for their first place finish at the 2013 Wesmen Varsity Boy’s Invitational Tournament held at the Duckworth Centre this past Friday and Saturday. Carter Bergen (MBCI) was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The tournament featured 20 of the top teams from Winnipeg and the surrounding area.

Inner City Summer Leagues Set Attendance Records

Inner City youth were out in full force this past summer participating in the University of Winnipeg’s Summer Soccer and Basketball Leagues. The Leagues are run by UW’s coaches and student athletes and are run to give Winnipeg’s inner city youth a fun, positive athletic experience. Community partners Spence Neighborhood Association and other agencies from the Youth Agencies Alliance were a key to the success of this summer’s programing.

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen are currently offering a trio of fundraising opportunities for the upcoming season. Two of which will COST YOU NOTHING! Wesmen Gold Cards, Sobey’s Gift Cards and Funscrip (an online version of a gift card) are still available. Each card purchased will help Wesmen student athletes this coming season.
