Welcoming Evidence Network to campus with new editor Sampert

WINNIPEG, MB – Effective April 1, 2017, Shannon Sampert will be taking over as director and editor-in-chief for Evidence Network, which will be housed at The University of Winnipeg. Dr. Sampert is an associate professor, Political Science at UWinnipeg who most recently joined the Winnipeg Free Press as perspectives and politics editor on a two-and-a-half year leave.

EvidenceNetwork.ca is a non-partisan, web-based project that creates original media content on health policy topics for publication in the mainstream media. It links journalists with health policy experts to provide access to credible, evidence-based information.  Major funding has been provided by the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement with support from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR central), the CIHR’s Institute for Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR), and Institute for Population and Public Health (IPPH), Research Manitoba, University of Manitoba Community Health Sciences/Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and the Canadian Frailty Network.

“We are proud to house Evidence Network, which is recognized as an important source on health care policy with a high profile amongst media and health care professionals,” said Dr. Jino Distasio, UWinnipeg’s Vice-President, Research and Innovation. “This is another way in which important academic research can be shared with the broader community.”

“I am delighted to take over the position as director and editor-in-chief,” said Dr. Sampert. “This is an opportunity for the sharing of academic evidence-based research that goes beyond journals and conferences and allows the public to read what Universities are talking about. It really is research in action!”

Dr. Sampert will teach in the Political Science department and will continue to do research in the area of media and politics.

Since 2011, Evidence Network has facilitated 3500 original media articles in every major newspaper across the country, as well as a wide range of regional and niche media outlets in English and French.
