UWinnipeg Welcomes Three New Eateries On Campus

WINNIPEG, MB – Students, office workers and the public are about to enjoy three new delicious dining options as The University of Winnipeg welcomes new culinary partners on campus.

Canad Inns will open a new concept, Garbonzo’s Pizza Pub in UWinnipeg’s renovated AnX at 491 Portage Avenue. Garbonzo’s Pizza Pub – where Italian meets English pub for a pizza and a pint.

“We are excited to join the UWinnipeg campus,” said Leo Ledohowski, President & Chair of Canad Inns. The great Garbonzo’s flavour our guests have come to expect will now be available to students, staff and guests to UWinnipeg.”

Also ahead, UWinnipeg’s award-winning Diversity Food Services will open Elements – The Restaurant, a licensed dining area devoted to local, nutritious foods prepared from scratch inside the new state-of-the-art Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, located on Portage Avenue at Langside Street.The restaurant team will be led by Chef Aron Epp and Chef Ben Kramer with a menu that will cover breakfast to evening dining.

“Our goal is to become a premier restaurant known for its culinary expertise and our commitment to socially responsible practices,” said Chef Kramer. A full service restaurant, Elements will be open to the public as well as staff and students and as the name suggests, the food will reflect a superb mix of culinary art and science creating a memorable experience.

At the new Buhler Centre, Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, in partnership with UWinnipeg, welcomes Stella’s Café and Bakery which will offer street-level dining and take away service from 6:30 am to 11:00 pm Monday through Sunday. Patrons can enjoy sandwiches made with artisan breads, croissants and danishes, muffins, cinnamon buns, cookies and cakes from Stella’s Bakery, available at the kiosk counter for dine-in or to take back to the office or classroom. Stella’s will also provide a great option for lunch and evening diners looking for a glass of wine and a great meal before a show or trip to a local gallery.

“We are thrilled to have Stella’s as a new partner, and essential component to our services and ambience at Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art,” said Plug In ICA Director Anthony Kiendl.”We have some exciting opportunities ahead of us with this partnership, and we are looking forward to great times and great food for our audiences and members.”

“We are excited to be a part of the uptown Winnipeg scene. Our proximity to the new Plug In ICA, Winnipeg Art Gallery, UWinnipeg and all of the other businesses in the downtown core make this opening a pivotal success for Stella’s,” said Megan Verrier, General Manager of the new Stella’s at the Buhler Centre. “We have a new menu that offers improved entree options for our lunch and dinner guests, increased vegetarian offerings, and maintains the integrity of what has made Stella’s successful…simple, flavourful food made from scratch.”

Adds Tore Sohlberg, owner, “We are so appreciative to our new friends at Plug In ICA and UWinnipeg, and we’d like to thank David Penner, Neil Minuk, and Peter Sampson, the architects for the Buhler Centre, who have managed to design our space in such a way that envelops Stella’s, while being reflective of the entire building. We welcome everyone to come share in a great experience, both for our guests and for everyone at Stella’s.”

Stella’s is expected to open by June and Elements and Garbonzo’s will be operational for September 2011.
