A UWinnipeg team cycled the streets this past Saturday at the Ride for Refuge, raising $8,000 for their efforts. The University of Winnipeg Team would like to thank the sponsors for their generosity and commitment to the cause. The team’s proceeds will enable refugees to study at UWinnipeg through World University Service Canada (WUSC).

UWinnipeg’s team consisted of students, staff, alumni and faculty: Dr. Dean Peachey, Vanja Tubin, Teruni Walaliyadde, Darren Nodrick, Angeline Rivard, Kelby Loeppky, Dr. Lloyd Kornelsen, Courtney Leiman, Micaela Crighton, Emily Epp, Yulia Senina, Joanna MacLean, Britt Christie, Haley Hickey and Hazim Ismail.

“I strongly believe that through education all this conflict and war can be eliminated,” said participant Walaliyadde, who is a student at UWinnipeg. “I participated to help at least one refugee to enter Canada and go to university. I too came from a country that was ravaged by civil war for many decades, and I can relate to what refugees go through.”

The local student-led WUSC chapter usually supports one refugee to study at UWinnipeg each year. In light of the current crisis, UWinnipeg’s Global College has joined forces with WUSC to increase campus participation and raise funds for additional students.

“The success of our team is evidence of the commitment of the UWinnipeg community to rally together for social justice and human rights,” expressed Vanja Tubin, Office Coordinator for UWinnipeg’s Global College. “It is also proof of our community’s enormous generosity to support those seeking an education free of the chaos of war.”

Those who are looking to help further can also donate to the Norman J. and Gwen Axworthy Bursary Fund, a Peace Education Fund dedicated to the support of refugees and war-affected persons. It was established by former UWinnipeg President Lloyd Axworthy in honour of his parents.
