WINNIPEG, MB –The University of Winnipeg congratulates all of the 2012 inductees into the Order of Manitoba and recognizes six individuals with strong ties to the institution. Among the 14 inductees who will receive the province’s highest honour are: Bob Silver, UWinnipeg Chancellor; Dr. Leslie Spillett, UWinnipeg Indigenous Advisory Circle member and Global College instructor; and Pauline Clarke, Winnipeg School Division’s chief superintendent and a partner in UWinnipeg’s Eco-U Summer Camp and Eco-Kids on Campus program. Also being inducted are two of UWinnipeg’s generous donors:  Dr. Randy Moffat and Mark Chipman, as well as UWinnipeg alumnus Dr. Art Miki, who serves on UWinnipeg’s Global College advisory board.

Three of the inductees are also past recipients of UWinnipeg Honorary Doctorates. Miki was honoured in 1999 for his work in and dedication to education and human rights. Moffat, the ‘quiet philanthropist’ and founding director of The University of Winnipeg Foundation, was honored in 2007. Spillett was honored in 2011 for her work and commitment to Winnipeg’s inner-city and Indigenous communities.

“The Order of Manitoba is the province’s highest honour and we are privileged that six of the inductees are committed to both educational access and The University of Winnipeg,” said UWinnipeg President and Vice Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy. “They are advocates for social justice and have generously contributed their expertise, efforts and resources to enhance our institution, our communities and our province.”

The University of Winnipeg is also pleased to recognize five individuals with institutional ties who were recently appointed to the Order of Canada: Dr. John Buhler, C.M. (and his wife Bonnie) are generous donors and supporters of UWinnipeg; Guy Maddin, C.M., O.M. is an alumnus and was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001; Steven Schipper, C.M. was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by UWinnipeg in 2007; and Prabhat Jha, O.C. and Craig Oliver, O.C. attended The University of Winnipeg and are associate alumni.
