UWinnipeg In Top 10: Maclean’s Ranking

UWinnipeg places 9th overall in Canada for second-straight year

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg ranks 9th overall in Canada among 21 primarily undergraduate universities – the same ranking as last year – in the Annual Maclean’s Ranking of Canadian Universities released on-line today.

“This past year has been marked by growth and a significant strengthening of our physical, academic and social infrastructure, which is reflected in our strong Maclean’s ranking,” said UWinnipeg President & Vice-Chancellor Lloyd Axworthy. “We have added to our students’ well-being with a state-of-the-art fitness facility, theatre and film students have a new home in the CanWest Centre for Theatre and Film, construction of the McFeetors Hall: Great West Life student residence is well underway and we’re breaking ground shortly on the Richardson College for Science and the Environment. We’ve developed a new BA in Human Rights degree and created a new Faculty of Business and Economics. That’s just a flavour of how we are evolving to remain one of the best university experiences as measured by students themselves.”

“I chose the University of Winnipeg because of its small community feel and its downtown location,” said Charlotte Meek, a second year BA student. “Class sizes are small and intimate and I therefore feel a personal connection with many of my teachers.”

The Maclean’s survey reinforces Meek’s experience, highlighting once again the University’s high satisfaction rates among its students, as UWinnipeg placed 6th Overall and 1st in Western Canada in the reputational survey category.

Maclean’s ranking builds on Globe & Mail survey

Last month, the Globe & Mail Canadian University Report 2009 survey also designated The University of Winnipeg as one of Canada’s top undergraduate universities, particularly in the area of academic excellence, with UWinnipeg ranking 1st or 2nd in six important categories including quality of education (1st), class sizes (1st), recreation & athletics, quality of teaching, student-faculty interaction and most satisfied students. As well, UWinnipeg placed 1st in Western Canada for academic reputation.

The Maclean’s ranking process begins in the spring when thousands of reputational surveys are sent to university officials, high-school principals and guidance counselors, heads of organizations, CEO’s and corporate recruiters across the country, asking for their views on quality and innovation at Canadian universities.
