The Last Ride was recently selected as the Jury Awards Best Canadian Documentary Short at the Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF). The Director is Rick Skene, University of Winnipeg associate professor, Department of Theatre and Film. It is now eligible for an Oscar.
The documentary is the story of music icon Errol “C-Weed” Ranville, his humble family origins, his groundbreaking music career, and how he recovered from a horrific auto accident to emerge as a powerful spokesman for reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and Canada.
“My feeling on hearing we received this award for Best Canadian Documentary Short was one of pride and relief. Pride in our amazing producer Gary Zubeck and talented crew, and relief that Errol’s trust in us to document the story of his life and legacy was perhaps not misplaced,” said Skene. “His is an incredible story that had to be told and I was honoured and humbled he trusted us to tell it. The award is really a testament to Errol. Without a doubt he is deserving of it.”
The Last Ride will screen locally at this year’s Gimme Some Truth documentary festival, at Cinematheque (100 Arthur Street, Winnipeg) on Thursday, November 2 at 7:00 pm. It will also air this fall/winter on Bravo Channel.
