UWinni[eg Students

WINNIPEG, MB – Preliminary enrolment numbers show more students than ever before are choosing to study at The University of Winnipeg with growth strongest in graduate programs which saw an 11.85% increase compared to this time last year, while undergraduate enrolment is also up 0.6%, for a blended overall increase of 1.1%. First year students self- identifying as Aboriginal is also strong at 12.03%, making UWinnipeg one of the top universities in Canada for Indigenous participation.

“In the past several years we’ve worked hard to create relevant programs in emerging fields and we have grown our Graduate Studies Faculty significantly, and students both here and abroad are responding,” said Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor. “We now offer the only Master’s degree in Development Practice with a focus on Indigenous development in the world, as well as fourteen other germane Master’s degrees in fields ranging from curatorial arts, to bioscience and public policy.”

Axworthy added that with UWinnipeg’s newly created Faculty of Kinesiology, further academic development is in progress in the growing fields of athletic therapy, sport pedagogy, coaching education, concussion research, inner-city youth sport development, and healthy living and nutrition programs. In the past decade, UWinnipeg’s student enrollment has grown by 55%, more than double the rate of growth at other Manitoba universities.

UWinnipeg is also offering increased flexibility and more students are taking spring and summer classes, with a 10.7% increase this year over last, from 2,756 student enrolments to 3,051.
