UWinnipeg Community Saddened By Loss Of First Nations Leader

The University of Winnipeg community is deeply saddened by the loss of highly respected Oji-Cree leader Elijah Harper, who passed away this morning.

“Elijah Harper’s leadership, historic support of Indigenous inclusion, and dedicated public service exemplified what makes a truly exceptional human being,” said Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor of UWinnipeg. “His inspiring commitment to the rights of Indigenous peoples has helped pave the way for healing and for increased connections and understanding between our communities. He was a true visionary.”

UWinnipeg awarded Harper an Honorary Doctor of Laws two years ago, in recognition of his commitment to human rights and betterment of the human condition. The honour was part of a special tribute to Indigenous life, achievement, and leadership, held during UWinnipeg’s 2011 Fall Convocation.
