University of Winnipeg: Even More Attractive to Ontario Students

WINNIPEG – With university credit for OACs, excellent scholarship opportunities, and safe and affordable student housing, the University of Winnipeg is a more attractive option for Ontario students than ever before.

Established in 1871, the University of Winnipeg was recently ranked by Maclean’s magazine as one of the top five primarily undergraduate universities in Canada. As such, it retained its “Best in the West” title for the fourth year in a row in the 11th Annual Maclean’s Ranking of Canadian Universities.

The University of Winnipeg’s admission requirements are appealing to many Ontario students, since Ontario applicants are considered on the same basis as Manitoba students: OACs are not required for entrance. However, for students who have completed OAC courses, UWinnipeg will consider up to five OACs (completed with a grade of 70% or better) for first year undergraduate credits.

“This means that the extra year of study put in by Ontario students is being recognized, placing them on a level playing field with Manitoba students,” states Michael Fox, University of Winnipeg Vice-President (Students). “The University of Winnipeg offers high quality undergraduate programs in arts, sciences, and education, with a high rate of success in allowing students to move into various professions. The University of Winnipeg is a great fit for Ontario students.”

Students who are planning to attend university, live outside of Winnipeg, and are the child or grandchild of a University of Winnipeg alumnus should consider applying for the Alumni Family Entrance Scholarship. UWinnipeg’s Alumni Association recently established the Alumni Family Entrance Scholarship to encourage children and grandchildren of alumni living away from Winnipeg to continue the University of Winnipeg tradition.

The Alumni Family Entrance Scholarship, worth $2,000, is awarded annually to a student of high academic standing (80% or higher) from any city or town outside of Winnipeg who has contributed significantly to extracurricular activities in the school and the community. Applications are available from the University of Winnipeg Awards Office (call 204.786.9458) and must be received by the March 1, 2002 deadline.

“The University of Winnipeg Alumni Association—now over 30,000 strong—takes education seriously,” says Martha Fortier, president of the Association. “We wanted to give something back and we also wanted being an alumnus of the University of Winnipeg to have distinct benefits, among them the right for your children or grandchildren to apply for a special scholarship designed just for them.”

The University of Winnipeg, with its downtown, urban campus, is a gem in the heart of the city. Dedicated professors, a commitment to make university education accessible, to place students first, and to lay a solid groundwork for a student’s future make UWinnipeg the best undergraduate university in western Canada. And, for students needing a place to stay, nine neighbourhood homes have been beautifully restored to provide safe, affordable student housing. Homestay options are also available.

Awards inqueries should be directed to the University Awards Office at 204.786.9459. Housing inquiries should be directed to Joe Danis at 204.786.9794.
