University of Winnipeg Celebrates Canada Chair

Downtown University Leader in Urban Research

WINNIPEG—Unique urban research at Winnipeg’s downtown university is getting a boost with the announcement of The University of Winnipeg’s second Canada Research Chair. Dr. Tom Carter of UWinnipeg’s Institute of Urban Studies has been named the Canada Research Chair in Urban Change and Adaptation.

Congratulating all new Chair recipients, Allan Rock, Minister of Industry, observed that, “The Canada Research Chairs Program is one we can be proud of. It will serve three generations of scholars and scientists: the senior researchers, the younger ones, and the graduate students who will benefit greatly by being able to work with world-class researchers in a high-profile environment.”

The University of Winnipeg’s Canada Research Chair in Urban Change and Adaptation is its second Canada Research Chair. Patrick Deane, UWinnipeg’s Acting President, congratulated Dr. Carter on his appointment, noting with pleasure that this honour reflects very well on the quality and significance of research undertaken at the University. “It confirms yet again what we have always known about this fine institution,” he said.” The University of Winnipeg engages in excellent research, and we attract some of the world’s finest researchers. Our students, and the citizens of our city and province, will reap the benefits of this forward-thinking work.”

Dr. Carter will assume the seven-year, $ 1.4 million Canada Research Chair in Urban Change and Adaptation as he continues his work in urban studies and in concert with of the Institute of Urban Studies.

This area of research uncovers important information about the causes of urban decline. By focussing on urban change and adaptation, Dr. Carter’s work reveals details about our past and our present, and looks toward uncovering effective solutions to the problems which beset our urban centres.

The announcement from the federal government consists of funding from the Canada Research Chairs and the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to provide infrastructure support to Canada Research Chairholders.
