Two UWinnipeg Graduates Head to Kyoto Summit

Marika Olynyk and Kate Dykman will represent UWinnipeg at World Student Environmental Summit in Japan

WINNIPEG, MB – UWinnipeg graduates Marika Olynyk and Kate Dykman will be attending the World Student Environmental Summit organized by Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan from June 19-22. This summit will discuss new technologies to curb global warming and ideas for students to create proactive solutions for sustainable development. University students from a dozen different countries were selected to discuss Sustainable Development from the standpoint of global citizens.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to have our students represent the University and their academic excellence in this high-level international environmental summit in Kyoto,” said Alan Diduck, Associate Professor and Director, Environmental Studies Program, UWinnipeg. “They will participate in working group discussions on campus sustainability and other pressing environmental issues. They will also have a chance to learn about leading projects from around the world which they can discuss and share with UWinnipeg’s Campus Sustainability Council upon their return.”

Olynyk and Dykman were chosen because of their proactive work and commitment in environmental issues on campus and within the community, and for their high academic standing and research in environmental issues.

Olynyk earned the gold medal in Environmental Studies this past year and was the valedictorian at her recent convocation.

Dykman also is a UWinnipeg graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. She was the former coordinator of EcoMAFIA (now Eco-PIA), former director of SunSet, member of the Campus Sustainability Council and soon to be waste audit manager at UWinnipeg.

This World Student Environmental Summit is an advance of the G8 summit conference in Toyako, Hokkaido, where world leaders will discuss the world economy, environmental concerns and African development.
