The University of Winnipeg: Record September Enrolment

WINNIPEG—The University of Winnipeg is reporting a record number of students as at the end of the first week of fall classes. A 7.77 per cent increase over last year, brings the total number of students studying at Winnipeg’s downtown, urban university to 8,280. The full-course equivalent increase is 8.37 per cent or a total of 27,724.9 FCEs.

“Our student enrolment projections were very accurate this year,” says Patrick Deane, Acting president of The University of Winnipeg. “It’s gratifying to see so many students on our campus. It’s clear that more and more people understand the value of a liberal arts and sciences education. This bodes well for the future of our province and our country.”

The University of Winnipeg has boosted recruitment efforts over the past few years, creating an Aboriginal Liaison Officer position, and building stronger relationships with high schools in Manitoba and NW Ontario.

The creation of safe, affordable student housing has attracted students from rural communities and abroad. This year’s increase in students can be attributed to expanded recruitment efforts, the compact nature of the campus, and the affordability of living and learning in Winnipeg. The reputation of our award-winning faculty and hands-on efforts of support staff have contributed significantly to The University of Winnipeg’s position as the number four undergraduate university in the country (Maclean’s magazine annual ranking).

More than half of first year University of Winnipeg students receive an entrance scholarship or bursary of some kind; continuing scholarships ensure that students can continue with their studies beyond the first year. This year, an additional scholarship was added to the pool of seven Alumni Entrance Scholarships offered by The University of Winnipeg, which are among the most prestigious awards available in the province.

“Just one scholarship reflects the generosity of many caring donors,” explains Lois Cherney, Program Director, Alumni Relations. “That’s why it’s so wonderful that alumni are able to add one more exceptional student to the list of Alumni Entrance Scholarship recipients.”

This year’s Alumni Entrance Scholarship recipients are:
Karen Bees, Silver Heights Collegiate
Tiffany Bilodeau, Nelson McIntryre Collegiate
Kanwal Brar, Sisler High School
Richelle Bronsdon, J.H. Bruns Collegiate
Pierce Cairns, Grandview School (Grandview, Man)
Peter Klippenstein, Westgate Mennonite Collegiate
Anne Laser, Glenlawn Collegiate Institute
Gillian Sze, Fort Richmond Collegiate

A reception to honour these students will be held October 7, 2003. Awards for continuing students will be presented on November 18, 2003.
