The University of Winnipeg: Celebrating Excellence

WINNIPEG—The University of Winnipeg’s scholarship program celebrates academic excellence and attracts top students. Each year The University of Winnipeg distributes over 1.3 million dollars in scholarships to new and returning students. Entrance Scholarships range in value from $10,500 to $100, and last year nearly one-half of first year students qualified for an award.

On Tuesday, October 7, 2003 The University of Winnipeg will honour a number of exceptional first-year students at its annual Entrance Scholarship Reception.

Where: Riddell Hall at 7:30 p.m. (near Spence Street entrance)

This year, an additional scholarship was added to the pool of seven Alumni Entrance Scholarships offered by The University of Winnipeg, which are among the most prestigious awards available in the province.

“Just one scholarship reflects the generosity of many caring donors,” explains Lois Cherney, Program Director, Alumni Relations. “That’s why it’s so wonderful that alumni are able to add one more exceptional student to the list of Alumni Entrance Scholarship recipients.”

The awards ceremony will include the presentation of a number of awards for first-year students, including the following prestigious scholarships:

  • Alumni Entrance Scholarship Program (AESP)
    Each Manitoba high school may nominate one student for these prestigious awards. Seven are available this year in the AESP category:
    Value: $4,500
    Criteria:
    – high academic standing and promise
    – noteworthy participation in extra-curricular activities
    in school and community
    – leadership qualities and strength of character
  • Marsha P. Hanen Entrance Scholarship
    This major scholarship was established in recognition of Dr. Marsha P. Hanen, President of The University of Winnipeg from 1989 to 1999. Only one student may receive the Marsha P. Hanen award.
    Value: $10,500
    ($4,500 for the first year, renewable for up to three more years at $2000 per year.) Criteria:
    – same as those of the Alumni Entrance Scholarship Program
    – selected from among the AESP nominees
  • Walter Leatherdale Entrance Scholarship
    Douglas Leatherdale, a 1957 graduate of United College established the Walter Leatherdale Entrance Scholarship, in memory of his father. One student may receive this award annually.
    Value: Full tuition for one year
    Criteria:
    – Same as those of the Alumni Entrance Scholarship Program
    – Must come from rural Manitoba and preferably from a farming community.
    – Selected from among the AESP nominees.

Awards for continuing University of Winnipeg students will be presented at a ceremony on November 18, 2003.
