The University of Winnipeg is hosting a significant fundraising event this Sunday, June 9, 2013 to support literacy and learning programs for girls and young women in India. In partnership with World Literacy Canada, the fundraising dinner will support the Mata Gujri Memorial Library and Learning Centre located in Bhanohar village. The creation of the Centre was made possible by a $70,000 donation in 2010 by Cliff Penner, president and owner of Winnipeg-based Ventura Custom Homes to The University of Winnipeg. Penner has made an additional contribution of $50,000 to the Centre’s on-going operations and programming.

UWinnipeg is partnering with World Literacy Canada to provide programming at the facility, which offers literacy classes, skills training and personal development in areas such as health and nutrition with a specific focus on attracting and supporting girls and young women.

Premier Greg Selinger toured the Mata Gujri Memorial Library and Learning Centre in January 2013 and provided a gift of books about Manitoba and Canada.

The fundraising dinner, Learning for Life: Promoting Literacy and Learning for Girls and Young Women in India takes place this Sunday, June 9, 2013 beginning at 6:00 PM at The Metropolitan Centre, 281 Donald Street. Proceeds will go towards programming and materials at the Mata Gujri Memorial Library and Learning Centre.

The guests of honour include the High Commissioner of India in Canada, His Excellency Admiral Nirmal Verma; the Premier of Manitoba, Honorable Greg Selinger; President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg, Dr. Lloyd Axworthy; and keynote speaker, Monika Deol, broadcaster, philanthropist and former UWinnipeg student.

Journalists are welcome to conduct one-on-one interviews between 6:30 and 7:00 pm at the event on Sunday, June 9, 2013.
