Solutions for Creating Sustainable Cities
How do we prepare for, and manage the challenges, and the transformations that are increasingly confronting cities? UWinnipegers Dr. Sylvie Albert (business and economics) and Dr. Manish Pandey (economics), help answer these questions in the new book, Innovative Solutions for Creating Sustainable Cities.
Albert is editor of the book and Pandey has contributed a chapter on telecommuting cities. The series of essays presented in this book is intended to help governments, organizations, and concerned citizens think differently about ways we can improve the places we call home.
Albert will be at the book launch on Saturday September 21, at 7:00 pm at McNally Robinson Booksellers , 1120 Grant Avenue.
Former Dean of Business and Economics at the University of Winnipeg, Albert is a consultant, researcher and author in the Smart/Intelligent/Networked Community Movement for over 25 years. Presiding over a management consulting firm for over a decade, she assisted communities in the establishment of broadband networks and digital projects.
Albert was the chief jurist of the Intelligent Community Forum in New York and a special advisor to the Canadian Government Smart Cities Challenge, where she devised evaluation mechanisms for awards and demonstration projects. She is also part of the scientific committee of the Global Forum on Digitalization, and a member of the Information and Communications Technology Council of Canada special task force on smart cities.
Pandey’s research is primarily empirical, and addresses issues related to the reasons for differences in productivity across countries; the impact of trade openness on labour productivity, government size and corruption; performance of immigrants in the Canadian labour market; and the public cost of mortgage interest deductibility in the US; among others. His research has been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
