Passing of Klaus Hochheim

It is with deep sadness that the University of Winnipeg community acknowledges the tragic passing of Arctic researcher and UWinnipeg alumnus, Klaus Hochheim.

Hochheim died on Monday night in a helicopter crash during a routine flight over the Arctic Ocean from the research icebreaker Amundsen.

Hochheim attended UWinnipeg and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Geography in 1982. His Honours thesis was on iceberg gouging in the Lake Agassiz basin.

University of Winnipeg Associate Dean of Science, Acting Principal of the Richardson College for the Environment and climate researcher, Dr. Danny Blair says, “Klaus was a very talented and well-liked scientist.  His death is an enormous loss to the climate research community in Manitoba and, indeed, Canada.”

Hochheim was a climatologist and research associate with the Centre for Earth Observation Science at the University of Manitoba.
