Partnership to Strengthen Human Rights Education

UWinnipeg signs agreement with Rotary International District 5550

Dr. Lloyd AxworthyWINNIPEG, MB – Thousands of students from around the world will be traveling to Winnipeg in the coming years to learn about global human rights as a result of an innovate partnership that was formalized today. Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg today signed an historic Memorandum of Understanding with Rotary International District 5550 that will build on the presence of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.

The MOU outlines a partnership that will see Rotary draw on its 33,000 clubs from around the world to select and fund students to travel to Winnipeg to visit the new Museum. While here, UWinnipeg, through its Global College, its Collegiate and Menno Simons College, will offer the students credit courses at both the high school and university level in human rights, conflict resolution and other related subjects.

“Winnipeg is evolving as a global centre of excellence in human rights knowledge and education,” said Dr. Axworthy. “The partnership that we have solidified today means thousands of young people, many from parts of the world that have witnessed strife, conflict and dislocation, will be afforded the opportunity to reflect on their life experiences.”

“This is an historic occasion for us,” said Cam King, chair of the World Peace Partners Committee, Rotary International District 5550. “We are committed to providing students with a well developed program that fosters global understanding. Being able to add educational seminars and classes at the Global College to their overall experience is an ideal fit.” Rotary International District 5550 is creating an endowment fund through fundraising efforts to cover travel costs for the students.
