New Provost and VP Academic at UWinnipeg

Dr. James Currie

The University of Winnipeg community congratulates Dr. James Currie, appointed Provost and Vice-President Academic, effective January 1, 2018. 

In this role Dr. Currie oversees academic faculties, student services and athletics.

Dr. Currie served as Acting Provost and Vice-President Academic since June 2017. His prior academic leadership roles at UWinnipeg include Associate Dean and Dean of Science, Associate Vice-President Academic and Deputy Provost, and Acting Dean of the Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health.

Dr. Currie began his academic career at Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia) before joining UWinnipeg in 1988 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.  He was promoted to full Professor in 2000.

In a recent presentation, Dr. Currie stated “The most important determinant of student experience is the classroom, the seminar, the practicum, or the lab, and student experience rests on UWinnipeg’s excellent faculty. However, there is more to the equation than this.” He observes “Institutionally, we are smarter together, as a team, and I look forward to progress on our fiscal and retention issues, while maintaining our academic and research excellence.”

Dr. Currie remains active in teaching and research, is an accomplished magician, and has attained a 4th degree black belt in Judo.
