WINNIPEG, MB – On behalf of senior executive, faculty and staff, Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor, The University of Winnipeg offers sincere congratulations to Dr. Brian Stevenson and wishes him every success in his new appointment as President and Vice-Chancellor, Lakehead University, in Thunder Bay.

Stevenson has served UWinnipeg as Provost and Vice-President (Academic) since November 2006, where he’s also a Professor in the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Throughout his career he has held senior positions at universities, in government, and at international organizations, including the Organization of American States in Washington, the University of Alberta, and the federal government in Ottawa. Born in Victoria, B.C., he grew up in Mexico and the United States and has authored and/or co-edited several books and numerous articles on Canadian politics, foreign policy, Canada-Mexico relations, Canadian security in Latin America, and the relationship between the Organization of American States and Canada.

“During his time at UWinnipeg, Brian Stevenson spearheaded a number of key initiatives, most significantly a comprehensive academic renewal process, and he did so with commitment and passion,” said Axworthy. “Students, faculty and staff in Northwestern Ontario will benefit from his depth of experience. We wish him every success in his new challenge.”

Stevenson takes on his new role at Lakehead University on August 1, 2010.

“I’m very excited about this new opportunity but, at the same time,Judy, Cecilia, Isabel and I are really going to miss Winnipeg and all the friends we’ve made at UWinnipeg,” said Stevenson.

The University of Winnipeg will begin the search for a new Vice-President (Academic) shortly.
