WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is singled out in the 2011 Maclean’s magazine University Rankings as one of Canada’s most innovative and successful campuses in fostering Indigenous scholarship and providing a respectful and relevant place for Indigenous students to learn.

In a special five-page spread, the national magazine features several UWinnipeg Aboriginal students and notes that Dr. Lloyd Axworthy’s deep commitment to closing the graduation gap for Indigenous students is getting results. Aboriginal student applications jumped 24% at UWinnipeg this September over last.

“We are proud to be singled out as a campus dedicated to nurturing Indigenous knowledge and excellence,” said Axworthy, UWinnipeg President & Vice-Chancellor. “Approximately 12% of our total student population is now First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students, making UWinnipeg one of the top universities in Canada for Indigenous participation. We are offering programs that are unique not only in Canada but globally, such as our Master’s degree in Development Practice with a focus on Indigenous Development. Our Urban and Inner-City studies program, featured in this issue of Maclean’s, combines a traditional urban studies focus with courses that examine the urban Aboriginal experience and the immigrant and refugee experience. We are creating a new lens through which to see the world and are attracting the best and most committed faculty and staff in the country as a result. We are also proud that our overall reputation continues to build, placing us 4th now in Canada and 1st in Western Canada.”

The 2011 Annual Maclean’s Ranking of Canadian Universities places UWinnipeg 4th for overall reputation (up from 5th last year) and 1st in Western Canada among primarily undergraduate universities. UWinnipeg placed 3rd nationally for nurturing ”Leaders of Tomorrow” and was also one of 10 universities in Canada singled for community outreach initiatives. In several other important categories, UWinnipeg ranked in the Top 3 for devoting resources to student services and Top 10 for small class sizes.

Today’s rankings come on the heels of The Globe & Mail Canadian University Report 2012, released on October 25, 2011, where UWinnipeg ranked among Canada’s best for diversity, environmental commitment and quality of teaching and learning.
