Leading Humanitarian to Speak at UWinnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB – Advocating “peace at the expense of war”, Dr. Samantha Nutt, founder and executive director of War Child Canada, will be speaking on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 7:30 pm in Convocation Hall, 515 Portage Avenue on The world as our backyard: Individual responsibility for a global age. This lecture is sponsored by The University of Winnipeg’s Global College and is free and open to the public.

“Samantha’s work and dedication in promoting human rights and assisting some of the world’s most vulnerable populations is making a difference in children’s lives everyday,” said UWinnipeg President & Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy. “Having her on campus sharing her vision and commitment is inspiring.”

Nutt is a medical doctor who has worked in war zones for more than a decade. She has lead efforts to provide direct humanitarian support and long-term programming to war-affected children and their families, and to promote greater awareness in Canada concerning the rights of children. She has worked in Iraq, Afghanistan, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Iraq, Burundi, northern Uganda and the Thai-Burmese border.

A specialist in Maternal and Child Health in zones of armed conflict, Family Medicine, Public Health, and Women’s Health, Nutt is also on staff at Sunnybrook and Women’s Health Science Centre and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

For her humanitarian work Nutt was chosen by Maclean’s Magazine for its annual Honour Roll as one of “12 Canadians making a difference”. She was profiled by Flare Magazine for their 25th anniversary edition as one of 30 “outstanding Canadian women”. She is a recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 Award (Globe and Mail), has been profiled by Time Magazine as one of Canada’s five leading activists and by CBC News Sunday as an outstanding Canadian leader. In addition, she was has been declared a ‘Canadian Trailblazer’ by Global Television.
