The Social Determinants of Health in Manitoba: Second Edition

The highly anticipated book launch of The Social Determinants of Health in Manitoba: Second Edition’ takes place on Thursday, September 24, 2015; 7:00 pm at McNally Robinson, Grant Park Mall. The book is co-edited by faculty members from UWinnipeg’s Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies Jim Silver and Shauna MacKinnon, and their colleague Lynn Fernandez.

The Social Determinants of Health in Manitoba, Second Edition – with contributions from 27 local experts – shows that indicators of a population’s health, such as life expectancy and infant and child mortality rates, are in large part a function of poverty, level of education, income, gender, employment, access to childcare and decent housing, and food security.

Chapters on colonization, Indigenous child welfare, immigration policy, unions and the healthcare system show where we should be focusing our resources if we want to improve the health of Manitobans and lower healthcare costs.

This launch is presented by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Manitoba Office (CCPA-MB).
