WINNIPEG, MB –More Indigenous students are choosing The University of Winnipeg which now has among the highest participation rates for First Nations, Metis and Inuit students in Canada. For fall 2015, first year undergraduate students self-identifying as Indigenous climbed to 12% compared to 10% last year. Overall, preliminary enrolment is stable with a 1% increase in undergraduate students from last year. UWinnipeg currently has 9,487 students enrolled, of which 548 are international students (5.8% of the student body).

“We are honoured to be attracting a rich diversity of students and talent which is one of our primary goals as Winnipeg’s downtown university located on Treaty One land, in the heart of the Metis homeland,” said Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg. “By working closely with the community, we have created numerous pathways into UWinnipeg as well as specific supports for non-traditional students, including adults and newcomers to Canada. We see this as one of our biggest strengths.”

Undergraduate students are registered for a total of 15,425 FCEs (full credit equivalents). This is similar to last year, when students registered for 15,406 FCEs.

Approximately 75% of UWinnipeg undergraduate students attend full time, while 90% of graduate students are full time (the exception is the Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy program, where the majority of students are enrolled part time. This program is designed to accommodate students who have other commitments such as work or family).

When all UWinnipeg programs are combined (including the Collegiate high school, English Language Program, Professional, Applied and Continuing Education students, and the new Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts on campus) UWinnipeg attracts more than 14,000 people to Winnipeg’s downtown and West End daily.

The 2015 English Language Program has 206 students enrolled. Professional, Applied and Continuing Education (PACE) has 164 full time students (which includes 74 international students). Additionally, approximately 2,500 students take part-time classes at PACE annually.

In the next several weeks, enrolment numbers will experience some fluctuation as students drop and add courses. Final enrolment numbers will be available in November.

Note: This year we have changed our reporting structure to a term-based reporting. This means the numbers in this report are based on Fall Term registrations only, as opposed to both Fall and Winter terms. Winter term enrolment numbers will be reported beginning in January. This is in line with the Manitoba and the Canadian standard, allowing for more accurate comparisons.
