Fourth Chancellor’s Research Chair selected

Bruno WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg today announced Dr. Bruno Silvestre, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Business and Economics, as the fourth Chancellor’s Research Chair.

Customers increasingly want products and services designed specifically for their needs, delivered quickly, for lower prices, and that are also sustainable (social, economic and environmental.) Yet this area has received little research attention.

Dr. Silvestre’s research project aims to answer the following key questions: How can supply chains effectively develop, implement and manage innovations? And how do these innovations impact supply chain sustainability (i.e., economic, environmental and social) performance?

This project will involve a systematic review of the literature on innovation, supply chain management and sustainability as well as in-person interviews and questionnaires with people in Manitoba’s aerospace, agriculture, construction and energy sectors. Students will be actively involved during the three year project.

“Innovation is the path through which supply chains can become more sustainable. Since the society (e.g., customers and media) is increasingly scrutinizing firms and supply chains regarding their sustainability performance, being sustainable has a fundamental economic effect on businesses”, said Dr. Silvestre. “This multi-disciplinary, problem-focused research project concentrates on managerial and policy relevance and has real-world implications for Manitoban and Canadian supply chains.”

“Please join me in congratulating this year’s Chancellor’s Research Chair,” said Dr. Neil Besner, Provost and Vice-President, Academic and International, UWinnipeg. “The goal of the Chancellor Research Chair is to support and enhance the important research underway on campus by giving our faculty members more opportunities to focus on research. Dr. Silvestre’s work is strengthening UWinnipeg’s reputation for academic excellence.”

Dr. Silvestre will take up this three-year position in Fall 2014.The Chancellor’s Research Chair is open to all UWinnipeg tenure-track faculty members and carries an award of $7,500 per annum. It was approved by the Board of Regents in May 2011.

The first three Chancellor’s Research Chairs were: Dr. Craig Willis, Biology; Dr. Angela Failler, Women’s and Gender Studies; and Dr. Melanie Martin, Physics.
