Scientists, engineers, and innovators from across Canada are opening their labs to the public this month to celebrate the annual Science Rendezvous festival. Faculty members and students at The University of Winnipeg are joining in the fun with a variety of hands-on activities aimed at promoting science awareness and literacy.

Everyone is invited to take part in this free, family-friendly event at the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex on Saturday, May 13, 2017.

“Science Rendezvous is important because it invites the public to the world class research institutions in their own backyards.” says Devin Latimer, Instructor (chemistry) and organizer of this year’s Science Rendezvous event at UWinnipeg. “We hope that by showcasing Canadian science through proactive engagement and allowing the public to get their hands on science we will inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.”

Faculty members from anthropology, chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, psychology, and computer science will be leading activities and holding demonstrations throughout the day.

A few of the exciting activities include: 3D printing, a chemistry magic show, the physics of music, a smoke cannon, identifying baby animal calls, a fossil dig, a visit from batmen and batwomen, and a walk through quicksand.

UWinnipeg physics professor Dr. Russell Mammei will be hosting a Fun with Dry Ice station where participants will be able to create “cloud” bubble bowls by dropping dry ice into warm soapy water.

Younger scientists (pre-kindergarten to elementary) will learn about phase transitions and heat transfer, while being able to touch and pop the cloud bubbles. For the older set, Mammei will be leading a workshop on DIY cloud chamber particle detectors.

Stop by UWinnipeg’s open house and let your inner scientist shine!

When: Saturday, May 13, 2017 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Where: Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, 599 Portage Avenue.
