Acknowledged internationally as the most influential oral historian of the last quarter century, Dr. Alessandro Portelli, Riley Fellow and Professor of American Literature, University of Rome, will explore studies of memory and oral history in contemporary society at the 2015 Riley Fellow Lecture. The event takes place on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 7:30 pm in Eckhardt Gramatté Hall. It is free and open to all.

“We are delighted to have Professor Portelli visiting the Oral History Centre,” said Dr. Nolan Reilly, Co-Director, Oral History Centre. “He is renowned for his  influence on a generation of oral historians. Professor Portelli will participate in many university and community events this week and his engaging lecture should not be missed.”

This lecture marks the opening of the International Workshop on Oral History at the Oral History Centre, University of Winnipeg, that runs from October 1–3, 2015. The workshop will include panel discussions featuring Oral History Centre associate faculty members from The University of Winnipeg, and prominent researchers from across Canada.  This workshop will have an interdisciplinary focus on the principles and practices in oral history, from theoretical concerns to research methods. A central focus of discussions will be ethical questions related to interviewing, and accessing and archiving interviews.

It will also be an opportunity for faculty and students who have not yet discovered the Oral History Centre to tour the centre, become familiar with its resources and meet with its excellent and knowledgeable staff members, Kent Davies and Kim Moore.
