In today’s job market, data scientist is one of the most sought-after jobs, both in the private and public sectors.

Data scientists are a ‘2.0’ in analytical data expertise. They are a new breed of scientist that is part statistician, part computer scientist, and part trend-spotter. These individuals have technical skills to solve complex problems — and the curiosity to explore what problems need to be solved — like fighting the spread of COVID-19.

This fall, a first in Manitoba, The University of Winnipeg’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics is offering  a four-year Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science in Statistics, Data Science Stream. Students will be able to start working towards this degree starting in September.

“Our department is thrilled to provide this new amazing opportunity for our undergraduate students,” said Dr. Anna Stokke, Chair, Department of Mathematics and Statistics. “In our data-driven economy, there is growing demand for data scientists in both government and industry.”

“With top-notch professors, small class sizes, and research opportunities that aren’t available to undergraduate students at larger institutions, students in our program will acquire a specialized skill set, making them highly competitive in the career market. We look forward to welcoming new students into our program this fall.”

UWinnipeg’s program has been designed for students to acquire the skills and knowledge to work in different sectors and will be prepared for a variety of job opportunities. They will be equipped to succeed in this highly competitive field of work as a data scientist, which Careercast.com ranked as the best career in 2019.

Graduates from this program will be well-educated, and trained to excel in contributing to and predicting future trends and making decisions in areas as diverse as medicine, business, advertising, entertainment, public health, insurance, finance, auto, travel, education, and many others.
