Curtain Rises On UWinnipeg Theatre Students’ Solo Works

UW Theatre Students Perform Solo Works in Exchange District

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg Department of Theatre and Film presents Asyndesis: An Evening of Solo Performances from Nov. 28-Dec. 1, 2007. Developed and performed by members of the fourth-year Honours Collective Creation class and directed by Claire Borody, this series of solo performances will be staged in the intimate setting of the Exchange Community Church, 84 Albert St.

Asyndesis is a medical term describing a mental state in which “separate thoughts cannot be joined into a coherent whole.” This term describes the approach to the project rather than an overall theme being explored; there is no unifying thread connecting the pieces. Each solo work is the result of the individual performer’s interpretation of core themes or ideas. Each piece offered is influenced and inspired by various art forms such as dance, literature, film, music, visual and plastic arts as well as popular culture and journalism. The performances are as diverse as their creators and provide a visual, aural and textual collage for audience members.

Collectively the performances explore themes such betrayal, abandonment and the search for identity; challenge notions of comedy and conformity; and deconstruct topical issues such as female sexuality, gender identity, systematic brutality, biogenetic engineering and our inheritance of food production.

The solo performances are arranged as two separate series each featuring five 20-minute solos. Series One performances run Wed., Nov. 28 and Fri., Nov. 30. Series Two performances run Thurs., Nov. 29 and Sat., Dec. 1. All shows take place at 8:00 p.m. at the Exchange Community Church, 84 Albert Street. Admission is free but reservations are recommended and seating is limited. Please call our 24-hour Reservation and Information Line at 204.786.9152, or visit The University of Winnipeg’s Department of Theatre and Film website at: http://theatre.uwinnipeg.ca.

The Exchange District Church on Albert Street is located in the historic exchange district across the street from local landmarks Mondragon and The Fyxx and next door to the Line-up and Artists Emporium.
