WINNIPEG, MB – University of Winnipeg Collegiate students Rachelle Arthur-MacDonald, Emma Gray, Sarah Ledger, Yin-Ying Ho, and Sonali-Suri, are making waves at the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology in Calgary. The centre granted the Collegiate students a $500 grant on an idea they submitted to the youth wing of the Centre, Wavemakers.  The five grade ten students created a “take action” team project designed to transfer what they have learned about water to a broader community.

Their Winnipeg project focuses on reversing the eutrophication of Lake Winnipeg. The students will raise public awareness through education by leading a series of workshops at local elementary schools. They also have worked hard creating a slideshow, planning instructional activities, writing informational brochures, setting up appointments with school principals and using the grant money to purchase phosphate- free/environmental products for distribution.

“As a teacher it is incredibly rewarding to see students actively engaged with the environmental issues we discussed in class, using the knowledge they have gained to make a real difference in their community, “said their teacher Isabela Dueck. “The students have shown impressive initiative and dedication to this project.  It is projects like this that create our leaders of tomorrow.”
