Battle of the Lion Kings

lion-kings

For the first time ever, the Battle of the Lion Kings will be fought in Canada at the Manitoba World Invitational Lion Dance Festival. This competition will bring Lion Dance troupes from around the world to perform.

The Lion Dance competition features athletic and artistic performers who dance at the top of poles ranging in size from 3 to 9.5 feet. There are typically six to eight players in a troupe with two taking on the physical demands of wearing the lion costume and jumping the poles. The other troupe members include a leader and musicians, (drum, gong and cymbals) that provide the rhythm for the dance.

The Lion Dance combines art and history in an extraordinary performance. Much like skating or gymnastics, the Lion Dance performers require the highest level of physical fitness along with expressiveness of an artist. The accompanying music is designed with a specific musical rhythm to showcase the movement of the Lion. The whole dance requires precision and unison from each member of the team.
