Author Chris Walter coming to campus

Independent author, publisher kickoffs Mouseland Press Speakers Series, Nov. 12

WINNIPEG, MB – Independent publisher, author and punk rock historian Chris Walter will speak at the West End Cultural Centre November 12 at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Mouseland Press Speakers Series. The ex-pat Winnipegger, now of Vancouver, will talk about his journey from hardcore drug addict to publishing entrepreneur and will read from his latest book, Punch the Boss, one of many published under the auspices of Walter’s GFY Press. The event details are:

Date: Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009

Time: 8:00 p.m.

Location: West End Cultural Centre, 586 Ellice Avenue at Sherbrook

Tickets: $8 at Kustom Kulture or UW Info Booth – $10 at the door. Free admission for UW students with student identification. Rush seating.

After decades of drug and alcohol addiction, the 6-foot-4, multi-tattooed Walter – a veteran of the early Winnipeg punk scene – found his calling as a writer. Clean, sober and prolific, he moved quickly from his autobiographical stage – debauchery-filled reminiscences of punk culture – to more poignant tales of poverty, black humour and disenfranchisement. With 18 books to his credit, he is a model for do-it-yourself success in publishing.

Presented by The Uniter, the student newspaper of The University of Winnipeg, the Mouseland Press Speakers Series is part of the paper’s efforts to extend its reach, enhance its contribution to community life on and off campus and maintain its relevance as an independent media source.

Walter is the first of three diverse speakers in the queue for November. He will be followed by Afghan MP Malalai Joya, on tour to promote her book, A Woman Among Warlords. Joya will appear at 7:00 p.m., November 16 in Convocation Hall at The University of Winnipeg under the auspices of partners united by Peace Alliance Winnipeg.

On November 19, in conjunction with the Restorative Justice Coalition, The Uniter presents Sandy Tolan, author of The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East.
