Attracting Chinese Students

UWinnipeg partnership with Beijing school offers new opportunities

WINNIPEG, MB – More students from China will be able to attend The University of Winnipeg beginning September, 2008 as a result of an agreement signed today by UWinnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy and Dr. Francis Pang, Chairman of Beijing Concord College of Sino-Canada.

Concord College is a unique learning environment established in Beijing where students are exposed to a combined Western and Eastern curriculum. Students receive dual graduation papers including a diploma with credit hours recognized in Canada. As a result, graduates of Concord College can move seamlessly through the admissions process at UWinnipeg.

“The agreement signed today with Concord College in Beijing builds on our important relationship with China as we grow our international student body,” said Dr. Axworthy. “Chinese students bring a different perspective to our classrooms and add tremendously to the diversity of campus life and ideas and to our global understanding, which is a core value at UWinnipeg.”

“This agreement with The University of Winnipeg is a good fit for us because it gives our students more opportunities to come to Canada to study,” said Dr. Francis Pang, Chairman of Beijing Concord College of Sino-Canada. “The education here is high quality and Winnipeg is a welcoming city for students. It is also my pleasure to work with Dr. Axworthy, who has a global vision.”

“As a person raised in Canada, I value the relationship we are building,” said Andy Truong, Executive Director of Beijing Concord College of Sino-Canada, who also attended today’s signing ceremony. “I am confident our students will get a very good education here.”

Currently UWinnipeg is home to approximately 150 students from China.
