Alternative final grade options permitted for 2019-2020 courses

Due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, University of Winnipeg students — including undergraduate, honours, and graduate students —may choose to exclude final grades in their grade point average (GPA) calculation for any course work completed in the Fall/Winter 2019-2020 and Winter 2020 terms (except for condensed Education courses that ended March 13).

For courses in which a standard letter grade is typically received, students can request that the grade be excluded from the calculation of their GPA. This option must be exercised no later than May 28, 2020 and the choice will be indicated on the student’s transcript.

Alternately, students may choose to request a grade of “S” (for “Standing”) instead of receiving a standard letter grade. This option is not available in condensed Education courses that ended March 13. A “Standing” categorization will not be factored into a student’s GPA calculation. This option must be exercised no later than May 28, 2020 and the choice will be indicated on the student’s transcript.

Students who receive academic penalties for academic misconduct in courses during 2019- 2020 are not eligible to make use of these options, in those courses.

If exercising either option, students must be aware that:

  • Grades excluded in the calculation of their GPA will not be used in calculating GPA for the purpose of program progression and/or overall graduation GPA Students who require a certain grade to continue with program progression must ensure not to choose the “Standing” option offered.
  • Where specific course grades, other than “Standing”, are required to satisfy UW pre-requisite requirements, for entry into other courses, or admission to other programs, and to satisfy any other program requirements, course grades will continue to be used. A grade of “Standing” cannot be used to satisfy a pre-requisite where a specific letter grade is normally required.
  • What constitutes a passing grade will be determined by the specific Faculty in which the course is offered.

See our list of frequently asked questions on final grading options for further information and considerations related to the grading options.
