Wesmen Wrestling Embraces Diversity Through Sport

The UWinnipeg Wesmen Wrestling team is hosting the 2017 University Sport National Wrestling Championships on campus this weekend. In recognition of UWinnipeg’s continued commitment to community programming and inner-city youth, the Wesmen will be hosting a free wrestling clinic for members of the Manitoba Amateur Wrestling Association, as well as some very special members of our community tomorrow, Thursday, February 23, 2017 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

Those attending the clinic will have the privilege of working with some of the top wrestling coaches that country has to offer, including several former Olympians.

The clinic lineup includes Olympic Gold and Bronze Medalist Carol Huynh; Olympic Coach Marty Calder; Wesmen Assistant Head Coach and Olympian Leah Ferguson; and former Syrian National Team Head Coach Mohammed Alhammoud-Aldrar.

These top athletes will have the opportunity of working with inner-city and new Canadian youth, including participants from Syria who have recently migrated to Canada and who now call Winnipeg home.

Other organizations that have been invited are The Newcomers Sport Academy, Canadian Muslim Women’s Institute, and N.E.E.D.S.
