Kely Warmington was named the Nikki Redekop Memorial Scholarship winner
Two future Wesmen, a former Wesmen, and a Junior Wesmen were among the big winners Sunday at the annual Volleyball Manitoba Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet.
U of W men’s team commit Nigel Nielsen was named the province’s 18U boys player of the year after an award-winning campaign in both high school and club seasons. Nielsen, who has been committed to Larry McKay’s men’s team since October 2017, was named the high school AAAA MVP after leading the Lord Selkirk Royals to the provincial title in December. Nielsen was also named tournament MVP during May’s Volleyball Manitoba club championships after leading his WinMan Clutch squad to the provincial title. Nielsen was also ranked No. 1 in the province in the Winnipeg Sun’s annual coaches poll of the top Manitoba players.
Meanwhile, Jr Wesmen standout Isaiah Olfert earned honours as the 17U boys player of the year. Olfert led the Jr Wesmen to the 17U boys provincial club championship and was named tournament MVP. Olfert, a student at Dakota Collegiate, also represented his school in the provincial beach championships in May, helping the Lancers duo finish second.
On the women’s side, Wesmen commit Kely Warmington was named the Nikki Redekop Memorial Scholarship winner. The award, named after the late Nikki Redekop, a former Wesmen player, is given annually to a player pursuing a post-secondary career who excels both academically and athletically. Warmington played her high school volleyball at Lord Selkirk and was named a graduating all-star, and also suited up for the Jr Wesmen 18U program this spring.
Finally, former Wesmen men’s team member Rob Olfert was named one of the winners of the Mary Jean England Awards for as the elite coach of the year. Olfert coached the 17U Jr Wesmen to the provincial title in Brandon in May.
