Wab Kinew to take leave for election run

wab-kinewWab Kinew is taking a leave of absence from his role as Associate Vice President, Indigenous Affairs at The University of Winnipeg to run as a candidate in the upcoming provincial election, after his nomination is confirmed.

“Wab has made important contributions to our university, particularly with respect to our position as a leader of Indigenous inclusion, and to our province — as an insightful, articulate voice in the discussion of reconciliation,” said Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor at UWinnipeg. “He has much to offer the people of Manitoba and we wish him great success in his future endeavours.”

A graduate of UWinnipeg’s Collegiate, Kinew became UWinnipeg’s first Director of Indigenous Inclusion in 2012. He assumed the role of Associate Vice-President, Indigenous Affairs in 2014. He has a BA in Economics, is completing a Masters degree in Indigenous Governance at UWinnipeg and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Cape Breton University in 2014.

“I’m very excited to join the democratic process and be of public service, and I value the many experiences and insights that I will take with me from my time at the University of Winnipeg,” said Kinew.

Like many other institutions, the University of Winnipeg values the democratic process and has an established policy which guides a leave of absence for employees seeking political office.
