On Thursday November 20, 2014, the West End BIZ presented two GEM Awards at its annual general meeting, held at the new University of Winnipeg United Health and RecPlex on Spence street.

Honored were The Institute of Urban Studies, an independent research arm of the University of Winnipeg. The Institute, headed by Director Jino Distasio, is dedicated to examining the broad scope of urban development issues. Its exploration of, and commitment to neighbourhoods in the downtown and inner city through projects and education are crucial in the revitalization and sustainable development of our urban communities.

“We value the efforts of the Institute, and appreciate how they work in partnership with other organizations to help effect positive change,” says Gloria Cardwell-Hoeppner, Executive Director for the West End BIZ.

Also honored was Casa Grande, a long standing business of over 30 years and strong supporter of the West End and the BIZ. Casa Grande is well known for its authentic atmosphere and warm welcoming hospitality.

The West End BIZ GEM Awards are given to individuals, businesses or organizations that stand out in the West End for their contributions to, and support of, the area and the BIZ. Awards are custom made by West End icon, Prairie Stained Glass.
