UWinnipeg takes a spot in Blue Dot Campaign

Two UWinnipeg students made waves at the the Blue Dot Campaign and tied for the top prize out of nearly 20 Canadian universities that participated. To earn this top ranking Talula Schlegel and Sarah Thorarinson—with the help of volunteers—were able to collect 444 signatures, the largest proportion of signatures relative to the student body.

This win has earned the UWinnipeg community a free interactive webinar with Severn Cullis-Suzuki. The webinar takes place on Tuesday, April 7th at 1pm in the HIVE and everyone is invited to attend. There will be a chance to discuss the next steps for the Blue Dot Movement on campus and hear from Severn about her efforts as an environmentalist. This webinar is intended to be UWinnipeg  campus-specific to engage in a discussion around the next steps the University can take to make it more sustainable.

Schlegel and Thorarinson, are enrolled in the are students in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences and have been active in a number of environmental movements on campus. They are also this year’s environmental ethics directors with the UWSA.

“The Blue Dot Movement is supported by the UWSA,” said Thorarinson. “We felt it represented the values shared by many students and faculty on campus. The Campus Challenge was intended to spread awareness of the movement in the form of friendly competition between campuses across the country.”
