UWinnipeg’s Dr. Jason Hannan (Assistant Professor, Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications, Faculty of Arts), was awarded for best journal article by the Philosophy of Communication Division of the National Communication Association (NCA). The award was given for his article, “Alasdair MacIntyre’s Contribution to Communication Theory,” published in Empedocles: European Journal for the Philosophy of Communication.

“Dr. Hannan was characteristically modest about the importance of this honour,” said Jaqueline McLeod Rogers, Chair of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications. “The scholarly prestige of the judging committee and the international stature of the competition is notable. His colleagues are truly impressed. We are happy to congratulate him on his accomplishment.”

“It’s encouraging to receive this award early on in my career,” said Hannan. “I’m very grateful to my department and especially to my Chair for their and her support.”

Hannan is the editor of Philosophical Profiles in the Theory of Communication (Peter Lang, 2012). His research interests include rhetoric and communication theory and moral controversy in medicine. He completed a PhD in Communication at Carleton University and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Program in Rhetoric and Public Culture at Northwestern University. He is currently completing a book manuscript on Alasdair MacIntyre’s philosophy of communication.

The National Communication Association is the largest organization for rhetoric and communication scholars in North America. This year marks the 100th anniversary of  the NCA.
