On Friday, November 13th, 2015, The University of Winnipeg Chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society held its third annual New Members Recognition Event in Convocation Hall. Many students, faculty members, friends, and family members congregated to recognize and congratulate the new inductees on their academic excellence. Dr. James Currie commended the Chapter, noting that “in soccer, you receive a trophy, but academics are so often overlooked. This is event is an excellent way to recognize and celebrate academic achievement.” The UW-GK Chapter now boasts 354 regular members, including 110 that joined this year alone, as well as 150 alumni members.

Following a brief meet and greet over appetizers, dainties and beverages, the ceremony commenced at 7:30 p.m. Chapter President Jason Yang presided over the evening and addressed the packed room. He stressed that the members in the room “are more than good students. We are students who enjoy challenges and strive for excellence in our fields. We believe in the power of knowledge to transform lives and change situations for the better. We seek to hone leadership skills, and we are charged with providing leadership in order to fulfill the guiding principles of this society, and we come together to make a difference in our community.”

This event was not only a chance to recognize new members of the Golden Key family; new Executive Committee (EC) members were also inducted. Organizing this event was a cooperative effort and would not have been possible without the involvement of the entire team, which consists of President Jason Yang, President-Elect Roxana Akhmetova, VP of Finance Evan Podaima, VP of Records Patricia Joven, Past President Glen Lovie, VP of Events Kimberly Thomson, VP of Marketing Ruth Dickinson, VP of Communications Francine Laurin, Director of Events Lisa Adey, Director of Marketing Philipp Graeff, Director of Communications Travis Sidak, and Director of Alumni Relations Rachel Blaine. The EC is also supported by its founders, Faculty Advisor Cathrine Froese-Klassen from the Faculty of Education and Staff Advisor Kam Holland, Director of Admissions, Awards and Financial Aid.

Every year, outstanding faculty, administrators, or community leaders who have excelled in their profession, research, teaching, or service are also inducted as Honorary Members into the Golden Key Society. This year, two UWinnipeg professors, Dr. Sylvie Albert, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics and Professional, Applied and Continuing Education, and Dr. James Currie, Dean of Science, were selected to receive this honor for their significant contributions to the academic community and for their support of the UWinnipeg Golden Key Chapter. Each gave an inspired speech on academics, leadership, and service, and the Executive Committee extends its sincere appreciation to them for their contribution to The University of Winnipeg and to its Golden Key Chapter.

The Golden Key Chapter expresses its gratitude to all those who attended the 2015 NMRE, including the UWinnipeg President, Dr. Annette Trimbee, all of its current members, its alumni members, and all who are continuing to support the UW-GK charitable initiatives.
