The University of Winnipeg unveiled the new name of the Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health today at a ceremony with several dignitaries in attendance including Dr. Daya Gupta and Dr. Chander Gupta. The new sign graces the south east corner of the Duckworth Building at 400  Spence Street.

“The naming of the Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health is a significant milestone in the evolution of our Faculty,” explains Dr. David Fitzpatrick, Dean (Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health).  “The signs identifying the Gupta Faculty will serve a purpose in promoting and marketing our Kinesiology courses and degrees, and our athletics programming.  The signs will be seen throughout the community surrounding the United Health and RecPlex and Duckworth facilities such that they will become another recruiting tool, inviting further inquires about studying at UWinnipeg. I have already received questions from prospective students asking more information about the courses and degrees that are available.”

This is  the first naming of a faculty on campus and it is also a first among  kinesiology and applied health schools across the country. UWinnipeg celebrates 50 years of kinesiology courses that began with the vision of Dr. David Anderson and his profound influence on UWinnipeg’s athletic and related academic programs. Anderson served as the first Director of Physical Education and Recreation. The Gupta’s generosity builds on Anderson’s initial foundation. This naming celebrates a new era with enhanced research opportunities that will also involve community.

“My wife and I and our family are dedicated to improving the health of Manitobans, and are especially interested in disease prevention and the emotional wellbeing of everyone from young people to seniors, who are too often lonely and isolated,” said Dr. Daya Gupta.  “This faculty can leave a lasting legacy by tackling and solving some of these health issues, and for us, supporting this kind of research is a very good fit.”

The Faculty of Kinesiology founded in 2012 is now the Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health. The Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health combines and integrates the academic, teaching, and research capacity of the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health, and the administrative and programming strengths of the Department of Athletics.
