Tuition paid!

Luis Consengco was resting comfortably late one summer morning, as some recent high school graduates tend to do, when he received a rather welcome phone call.

It was Nadia calling from The University of Winnipeg’s Student Recruitment office. Luis had spoken with Nadia once before, when she came to Glenlawn Collegiate for a presentation. But Nadia wasn’t calling to talk about first-year courses or entrance requirements. Instead, she was calling to let Luis know that he was the lucky winner of this year’s $5,000 tuition credit draw.

Though half asleep when the call came, Luis was so elated at the good news that he immediately ran downstairs to tell his mom. He says that the tuition credit has “reduced my mom’s stress and my own.” He was all smiles but still feeling a bit of shock when he came to Recruitment office to make his prize official.

To be eligible for the tuition draw, Luis filled out a UWinnipeg Contact Card after the presentation at his school. Luis mentioned the very helpful fellow students at Glenlawn, as well Mr. Poulter, his physics teacher with good ‘dad jokes,’ and Mr. Long, who helped make sense of pre-calculus and relieve exam stress. Aside from enjoying his science classes, Luis is also a member of The Vocalistics, an a capella beatbox group.

As he begins life as a UWinnipeg student, Luis is looking forward to studying biology and chemistry, with a plan to one day become a family physician or an emergency room doctor. But before that, he is hoping to regularly contribute in class and join one of the many clubs and groups offered through the The University of Winnipeg Students Association (UWSA).

He is also interested in the Study Abroad program in his second year, with an eye to studying in Japan for a term or two. Luis has always been a big anime fan and had a chance to visit the country two years ago, so he can’t wait to go back. In the meantime, he is very happy to be starting the new school year with his tuition paid!

If you are a current high school student and you would like to enter your name for the next $5,000 tuition credit draw, simply fill out a UWinnipeg Contact Card after the presentation at your high school this fall, or at one of our events on campus: Future Student Night (November 28), or Open House (February 20).
