The University of Winnipeg Collegiate (UWC) is embarking on an exciting new venture in reconciliation. Staring this Spring UWC is offering an engaging new Truth and Reconciliation course that begins Monday, May 1, 2017 and runs until June 23. The course will provide the opportunity for students to explore the relationship between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples that live in Canada. Students will learn the truth about the broken relationships that have formed the complicated foundation of our nation, and they will be guided, through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action.

“So many of the TRC’s Calls to Action are about education and awareness,” shared Kevin Lamoureux, UWinnipeg Associate Vice President, Indigenous Affairs. “Through this innovative high school experience, students will be empowered to see themselves as contributors to reconciliation. We are so proud of the Collegiate, the instructors and the students for taking on this important challenge!”

Some of the topics that the course will explore include treaties, privilege, family health, economic inequity, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, the Justice System, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the roles of new Canadians in reconciliation. Students will also have the opportunity to share their own stories, challenge perceptions, view hard truths,  listen and engage in new perspectives and participate in cultural activities.

The exciting list of speakers include University of Manitoba professor Dr. Niigaan Sinclair, musician John K. Sampson, and author Theodore Fontaine.
