Theater to Remember

UWinnipeg's Production of forgotten rooms

WINNIPEG—What makes us eliminate or highlight specific details about events or people from our past? Who can explain the fact that a selection process occurs in the brain and that deleting or storing information seems almost arbitrary at times? What is going on in the regions of the brain that we do not use on a daily basis? Is the process of trying to forget an indirect route to retaining memory?

The University of Winnipeg’s Department of Theatre and Drama will explore these and other questions about memory, remembrance, and forgetting in forgotten rooms, a performance piece created and executed by members of its 4th-Year Honours Collective Creation class. The performers function as an ensemble company, training and creating together since September.

Inspired and informed by many sources, forgotten rooms shifts between inner and outer landscapes. It is the result of individual and ensemble responses to a variety of intriguing questions associated with memory.

forgotten rooms is best described as a theatrical collage of visual, aural, and textual images that draws from various art forms—literature, dance, visual arts, Asian theatre principles, and original text—in its construction. forgotten rooms is the second performance offering from this ensemble, the same troupe which created brave new works, an evening of solo pieces last November.

forgotten rooms runs from Monday, March 17 – Friday, March 21. All performances are at 8 p.m. at Convocation Hall (2nd Floor, Wesley Hall, University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Avenue). Admission is free but reservations are recommended. To make a reservation, call our 24-hour Reservation and Information Line at 204.786.9152, or visit the UWinnipeg Theatre Department website at theatre.uwinnipeg.ca
