The Passing of John Atta-Mills President of Ghana

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg expresses their deepest sympathies to the people of Ghana and the family of Dr. John Atta-Mills, President of Ghana, who passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Mills was the first serving president in Ghana’s 55 years as an independent nation

President Mills and Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, UWinnipeg’s President and Vice-Chancellor recently met this past May to establish a working relationship between the Masters in Development Practice program (MDP) and the University for Development Studies (Ghana), leading to a joint initiative on the study of development practice for Indigenous and traditional societies.

Axworthy and the late President Atta-Mills, had known each for over a decade, working together at Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia when Axworthy served as Director and CEO of the institute and Atta-Mills served as a visiting fellow.
