WINNIPEG, MB–In honour of alumnus and past Downtown BIZ Chair, Kevin Donnelly, the Downtown BIZ has created a bursary in his name, The Downtown BIZ Kevin Donnelly Bursary in Business and Economics that will be awarded annually to a deserving student who is a business student and is also a member of the Business Administration Students’ Association (BASA).

This bursary is the brain child of two BIZ colleaguesthat are both UWinnipeg alumni, Stefano Grande, BIZ Executive Director and Jason Syvixay, past UWSA President, now BIZ Public Relations Coordinator, who both felt it was important to give back to their alma mater and to honour a fellow alumnus. This bursary recognizes the importance of young entrepreneurs in the fields of Business and Economics, as they are central to the economic vitality, growth and revitalization of our downtown.

“Fostering an entrepreneurial spirit with UWinnipeg students is part of a larger vision of the BIZ in engaging young people to contribute meaningfully to the fabric of our downtown,” said Grande. “Along with this bursary, the BIZ has shown its commitment to this vision by bringing in two UWinnipeg students to intern with the BIZ, complementing their studies with real life experience.”

“We thank the BIZ for investing in our students and recognizing the importance of being involved on campus,” said BASA President and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Friesen. “Bursaries like this are crucial for students who need to relieve some of the financial burden of their education. We appreciate our strong partnership with the BIZ and we look forward to working together on more great opportunities for students.”

Kevin Donnelly is Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the MTS Centre. He is an established successful promoter and entrepreneur with a breadth of experience and knowledge of the entertainment industry, both in Winnipeg and across Canada and has contributed greatly to the growth of Winnipeg’s downtown. Donnelly is a Board member of Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Advisory Board of the Venue Coalition and The Talent Acquisition Committee of the Arena Network.

“I am honored and excited to have this bursary established in my name,” said Donnelly. “Supporting the needs of students at our downtown campus is integral in sustaining a vibrant community where youth can get an education, find employment and contribute to the ongoing success story that is taking place in downtown Winnipeg.”
