Student recyclers get big surprise

Kristel Mangin winning an Electra bike

Three unsuspecting UWinnipeg students each received a big surprise when they recycled their used beverage containers on October 23, 2013. It was Waste Reduction Week on campus and the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association (CBCRA) stopped by to give away prizes to recyclers. When the student dropped a beverage container into the “magic bin”, the area exploded with the sounds of air horns and cheers and the recycler was showered with confetti. Each lucky winner was given a prize of either a bike or a jacket. The prizes were all made from recycled materials.

Julious Gambalan winning a North Face jacket

Third-year Biochemistry student Julious Gambalan took home a jacket and fifth-year Education students Kristel Mangin and Ryan DeJonckheere each won a bike.

“I always recycle but I had no idea I could win a new bike” said Ryan DeJonckheere. “I am super excited!”

Film crews were on-site and a video promoting this fun event will be coming soon. Watch for it on our Facebook and Twitter pages!

Waste Reduction Week is organized by UWinnipeg’s Campus Sustainability Office. Representatives spoke to over 1,000 students, faculty and staff about our waste diversion program and gave away prizes of Diversity gift cards for the Waste Reduction Challenge raffle. The Sustainability Office acts as the coordinating body bringing the University closer to its sustainability mission.

Recycle Everywhere is a campaign designed to encourage recycling of beverage containers both at home and away from home. Their goal is to reach the target of recovering 75% of beverage containers sold in Manitoba.

The Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association implemented and operates the Recycle Everywhere program. Founded in 2010, CBCRA is a not-for-profit, industry-funded organization whose membership includes beverage brand owners and distributors. CBCRA is committed to reaching the government-mandated target of recovering 75 per cent of beverage containers sold in Manitoba. We’re well on our way to achieving that goal.
