It takes many hardworking volunteers to organize the very successful UWinnipeg Spring Pow Wow, and student Teddy Lands has stepped up to recruit and coordinate those helping hands.

UWinnipeg’s 15th Annual Spring Pow Wow honours Indigenous graduates, their professors and families in a day-long celebration and feast.

Lands was motivated to help because she remembers how it felt to be honoured when she received a diploma from the University of Manitoba back in 2005.

“Being recognized for our accomplishments means a lot, it really made me feel proud,” said Lands. “It gives me a sense of strength to know how much work goes into honouring these graduates with a Pow Wow and to mark the success they have had on their educational journeys.”

Lands is Ojibway from Lac Seul First Nation in NorthWestern Ontario and is currently in her first year of Disability Studies at UWinnipeg. She is also a member of the Aboriginal Student Council. She spent many years working in the social services field with troubled youth, and domestic violence and FASD awareness programs before deciding to return to University as an adult learner.

The Spring Pow Wow is hosted by the Aboriginal Student Council (ASC) and the Aboriginal Student Services Centre (ASSC).  Everyone is welcome.
